The Vancouver Public Library is looking for a strategic and visionary leader for the position of City Librarian.
Founded in 1887, the Vancouver Public Library is one of Canada’s largest library systems, dedicated to meeting the lifelong learning, reading, recreation and information needs of the people of Vancouver. Each year, the Library’s 22 branches serve 6.4 million visitors and circulate 9.8 million items. The Library enjoys strong public support and is an important contributor to the well being of the citizens of Vancouver, considered one of the most liveable and literate cities in the world. The Library is deeply rooted in the communities it serves and the iconic Central Branch is a gathering place for the whole city.
The City Librarian is responsible to the Vancouver Public Library Board of Trustees for achieving the goals and objectives set by the Board; for managing Library resources; for presenting and representing the Library in the community; and for planning for the Library of the future. As well, the City Librarian is Secretary to the Board and is responsible as its chief advisor for providing the Board with appropriate information on which to base its policy decisions. The work is performed within general guidelines, policies and statute provisions, but considerable latitude in exercising judgment is accorded and expected of the City Librarian.
The ideal candidate will be an inspirational and effective leader with a graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited school. S/he will have progressive senior management experience in a large library system, outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and a collaborative leadership style.
