Reference Services Librarian
Northwest University

Position Summary

This position is responsible for enhancing library services and access to academic resources through extensive reference, instruction and outreach activities.  Like all members of the Hurst Library team, this position will work collaboratively to build strong relationships and serve as an ambassador from the Library to the University community.

Essential Functions

Primary responsibility for the planning, development and provision of reference and information literacy services.

Leads the Reference Services team in initiating and coordinating library reference services that are focused on engaging and supporting students, faculty and staff.

Leading the Librarians in providing information literacy programs including lectures, demonstrations, and orientations as needed by on-site and off-site faculty and students.  Scheduling research education sessions, creating online reference and instruction materials, conducting instruction in all areas as needed.

Acquisitions/selection and collection management responsibilities for the reference collection, including print and electronic materials, with assistance from other library liaisons.

Primary responsibility for the Library’s assessment activities, including community feedback and surveys, and any necessary accreditation outcome assessments, including documentation.

Assist and advise Library Director with reference desk policies and procedures.

Liaison to NU’s adult degree completion program (LEAP).

Attending library and campus meetings, including chapel. (After first year, add campus committee responsibilities.)

Functioning as part of the Library management team under the leadership of the Library Director.

Professional development such as continuing education, research, presentations, etc.

 Providing back-up assistance for circulation.

Qualifications

An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science is required. The candidate must possess excellent written communication and presentation skills, as well as demonstrate familiarity with traditional in-library encounters and openness to creative reference services outreach, such as residence hall visits, social networking forums and faculty office calls. The individual must be enthusiastic for and have a commitment to customer service, as well as an energetic and motivated team orientation. A strong public service focus with an ability to take initiative and carry out projects to completion,   coupled with an ability to work both independently and on a team, is essential. The ability to both learn and promote new technology for reference research and teaching is also necessary.

Compensation

Dependent on education and experience, and based upon the established faculty salary schedule.
