Job Description
Serials Solutions seeks an experienced metadata standards specialist/cataloger to manage bibliographic data and to maintain the accuracy of the authority data used to support our KnowledgeWorks Solutions. Responsibilities will include increasing the number of MARC records in our bibliographic database, expanding our authority metadata, maintaining the integrity of the data in the system, and supporting the enrichment of metadata through the application of new taxonomies.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the integrity of the Serials Solutions knowledgebase at an authority level.
- Acquire, create, and maintain catalog records using MARC21, AACR2, LC Classification and LCSH for resources in multiple formats.
- Maintain relationships with existing and future cataloging vendors.
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of electronic resources, the publishing industry
- Associate existing MARC records (primarily from CONSER for electronic journals) with provider holdings data to ensure that Serials Solutions has as close to 100% MARC record coverage for tracked electronic resource databases.
- Proactively identify and evaluate process improvements to enhance the quality of the authority metadata.
- Troubleshoot and solve problems identified by clients and client services staff.
- Collaborate with product management to identify and implement metadata enhancements.
- Develop data specs as required to support metadata enhancements
- Keep abreast of changing standards/policies in the cataloging/electronic resources world.
- Demonstrate knowledge of all Serials Solutions products and data and how they interact with each other.
- Work closely with data acquisition team to ensure consistency with data management policy and practice.
- Assign local subject classifications to authority electronic resources. Support acquisition and maintenance of new taxonomies as required.
Skills and Qualifications
- BS/BA and MLS or MLIS degrees required.
- Knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards, Library of Congress subject headings and classification.
- Demonstrated ability to apply current cataloging rules and standards; e.g., a minimum 2 years experience as a serials cataloger or other comparable experience.
- Knowledge of the structure and application of taxonomies
- Strong technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Understanding of the nature of continuing electronic resources.
- Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a service and production-oriented environment.
