Position: Subject Librarian for Life Sciences
Available: February 2011
Description/Environment
Brigham Young University (BYU), a privately owned and operated university of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located in Provo, Utah, invites application for a continuing faculty status (CFS) track (BYU equivalent of tenure) position in the Public Services Division of the Harold B. Lee Library. The library is seeking a dynamic individual who can perform well in a rapidly changing environment. The mission of the Subject Librarian for Biology, Exercise Sciences, Health Science, Plant & Wildlife Sciences, and Recreation Management and Youth Leadership is to develop and manage collections in these subject areas as well as providing reference, advanced research assistance, information literacy instruction, and to act as a Library liaison with these University Departments.

Responsibilities:
-Work with the teaching faculty in assigned subject areas to develop, maintain, preserve, and evaluate library collections.
-Develop and revise collection policies in assigned areas in accordance with established policies.
-Assist in academic accreditation reviews of library services, collections, and budgeting for assigned subject areas.
-Provide library use instruction and reference/research services in assigned subject areas including research methodology, strategy and information assessment. Instruct local and remote students and faculty in electronic database usage. Prepare subject bibliographies and maintain Internet resource pages. Keep abreast of the best reference and research resources related to the assigned subject areas.
-Consult regularly with department chairs, college deans where appropriate, and faculty representatives for assigned subject areas. Consult with all new members of the teaching faculty in assigned subject areas and periodically with all faculty in assigned departments.
-Prepare reports and budgets as requested.
-Participate in the training of student reference assistants in using resources in assigned subjects.
-Serve on Library and/or University committees.
-Contribute to state, regional, and national scholarly associations and committees and participate in research, publication, and other professional and scholarly activities as required by the Library Faculty Rank and Status documen
Qualifications:
-MLS from an ALA-accredited institution is required. However, applicants who have related education or work experience and who are committed to completing the MLS within a specified period of time may be considered.
-Second Master’s degree or a Ph.D. in a subject area of responsibility is desired.
-Knowledge of biology, exercise science, health sciences, plant and wildlife sciences, and recreation management and youth leadership required.
-Subject expertise at a level that will enable the person to assess the curricular and research needs of the University and to build the collections to meet those needs.
-Ability to provide advanced research assistance in all of the assigned subject areas.
-Ability and desire to interact with students and faculty.
-Ability to teach and participate in outreach programs such as class lectures, exhibits, and presentations.
-Expertise and significant experience in collection management and development.
-Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, students, and the general public.
-Flexibility in adapting to changing departmental and organizational priorities and to ever-changing technological environments.
Salary and Benefits:
This is a CFS track position with generous insurance and retirement benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications. This is a twelve (12) month appointment with twenty-two (22) days annual leave and additional professional development time available
