Pay Grade 133s, $4,548- $6,112 monthly. FLSA Exempt, Represented Position
Forty (40) hours per week on a regular schedule to be established at time of hire. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, substitute for other staff, and attend meetings.
Directs the selection, assignment, and development of collection materials for the Pierce County Library System; assesses the usage of collection materials; conducts materials research; liaises with vendors; directs the weeding and repair of library materials; leads and/or coordinates special projects; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Required: Masters Degree in Library Science; plus three years public service in a library branch, including some collection work or related collection experience which would provide the required knowledge and skill that allow successful performance of the job.

Position Summary:
Directs the selection, assignment, and development of collection materials for the Pierce County Library System; assesses the usage of collection materials; conducts materials research; liaises with vendors; directs the weeding and repair of library materials; leads and/or coordinates special projects; and performs other related duties as assigned. Reports to the Collection Services Manager; no supervisory responsibility is exercised.
Essential Functions:

  • Delivers high-quality, customer-focused services.
  • Selects, assigns, and oversees the development and maintenance of collection materials for the Pierce County Library System.
  • Administers materials budget for area of assignment; recommends budget allocations; monitors and authorizes expenditures.
  • Researches, evaluates, and selects materials utilizing publisher and vendor databases, print catalogs, online and print review sources, and input from customers and staff.
  • Provides guidance for processing, and cataloging of materials by other library personnel when needed.
  • Establishes and maintains vendor relationships; negotiates contracts and purchase agreements for library materials and/or services.
  • Reviews branch and program statistics, demographics, and holdings information to determine the assignment of selected materials.
  • Promotes assigned collections through the use of the staff website, public website, library programs, partnerships, and community organizations; creates bibliographies, deliver book talks,.
  • Explains and supports the collection and selection policies to staff, customers, and the public.
  • Oversees the maintenance and weeding of assigned collections; conducts periodic site visits to assess the usage, age, and condition of collections.
  • Identifies materials for reassignment and/or removal from the collection; schedules and supervises weeding activities.
  • Assists in developing and implementing Library policies and procedures; provides staff training regarding collection policies and/or collection assignment and disposal procedures.
  • Leads and/or participates in performing a variety of special projects.
  • Represents the Library at community events, through the media, and to outside agencies.
  • Attends and participates in a variety of meetings; serves on committees as assigned.
  • Stays apprised of trends and developments in the field of collection management and popular culture.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and regular and consistent attendance.
  • Brings matters of public concern regarding waste, inefficiency, corruption, discrimination, and safety to the attention of Library Management.
  • Accurately communicates the Library’s policies to members of the public in all job-related contacts.
  • Positively reflects Pierce County Library’s mission, vision, and values to members of the public and to staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Required Skill in:

  • Overseeing the selection and maintenance of assigned library collections.
  • Ensuring the development of collections that appropriately meet the needs of customers.
  • Liaising with vendors and negotiating contracts and service agreements.
  • Researching, evaluating, selecting, and assigning library materials.
  • Coordinating the maintenance and weeding of library collections.
  • Administering materials budgets and monitoring expenditure.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science, and three years public service in a library branch, including some collection work; OR
  • any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skills and allows successful performance of the job.

Licenses, Certifications, and Special Requirements:

  • State of Washington Librarian Certification is required.
  • A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
  • Must pass local police and Washington State Adult/Child Abuse records check prior to hire.
  • The ability to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule and to adapt to schedule changes on short notice is required.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a library environment.
  • Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing stepstools/stepladders, and lifting of objects weighing up to 30 - 35 pounds.
  • Must be able to lift and carry library materials and push/pull loaded carts.
